The Annual Juried Student Competitive Exhibition is open to all UCA students free of charge, and features cash awards provided by the UCA Department of Art to recognize excellence. The Department of Art faculty selects a guest juror who then selects approximately 50 pieces for the exhibition. The award-winning art works and artists are recognized at the opening reception which is free of charge and open to the public.

The entry all-call for submission of works in all media is distributed in mid-February; the competitive exhibition usually takes place in March.

Saturday during ARTclicks! [and Artsfest] we had Virmarie Depoyster visit. Born in Porta Rico, Virmarie now lives in Little Rock and was lovely enough to grace us with a presentation of her art.

Varmarie paints with pastels on Wallis Museum Paper, VERY COOL! ... :) If you would like to see some of vibrant beautiful works they are hanging in the Art Lecture Hall [RM 143 of McCastlain Hall]

It's been a while, sorry for the long delay, we have been so busy here at the Baum Gallery with a great many things one of which is our current exhibit:

Pre-Columbian Artifacts: UCA's Reddick Collection

This exhibit is a collection of pottery [vessels, bowls, figures] dating back to 200BC that was donated to the university by Dr. and Mrs. Earl B. Riddick. It's pretty amazing stuff. As a part of this exhibit the Baum Gallery is allowing Dr. Allison Hall's museum studies class to come and work on the exhibit to help categorize and photography the pieces for better storage once the exhibit comes down.

we have also had a few film students in for documentary purposes, this exhibit is a big to'do!

So, since nothing is going on this summer at the Baum, I thought, every now and then we could look at art around the world, see what is in OTHER galleries. :)

Today I have a YouTube page titled "Art in Unusual Mediums" art made of cheese puffs, mascara, ribs. haha. very entertaining and neat-o

To attend the first ever UCA Tiny Art Auction to be held in the Baum Gallery next Monday, May 4th from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. This silent auction will include small works from both UCA students and faculty. The bidding starts at only $10.00. Proceeds will benefit Independent Living Services, a private, community-based, non-profit agency in Conway that seeks to help people with developmental disabilities live as independently as possible within the community. Art, music, life skills, and physical, speech, and occupational therapy are taught through adult development programs at ILS.

It is not too late to donate work to the auction. We are accepting small, unframed works in any media. You can drop off work in McAlister 101 as late as Monday afternoon. We just need your name, title of work and media. Please contact Holly Laws at hlaws@uca.edu if you have questions.

Kerry Skarbakka came to visit us today, he spoke during X-Period and then came tonight for a formal lecture in the art lecture hall. He was VERY charismatic and seemed like a really cool guy that all of us would love to be friends with. :D at least i would. Listening to him talk about his trials in life that made his path to us at UCA really gave me a bit of hope with all the 'issue' we seem to have these days. With a lot of hard work and a little luck success is not far. :D

On Saturday Mr. Skarbakka will be deciding the fate of the 2009 Student Competitive. Those of you that missed the lecture can see it on video in a week, if you need a paper topic or what not. :D we'll post the video on here, on facebook, and it'll be on our youtube account.

I'm very Glad Mr. Skarbakka came to see us at UCA and i hope he comes back again. he was very entertaining. :D

A few days before the gallery opened for our current show we decided to make some comment cards so we could know what visitors thought about the exhibit. I'm collecting them and every friday i will post the best and my favorite of the comments! On our cards we also ask "what is your favorite piece in the show" and we are getting very consistent votes!

Since I missed last Friday [their just weren't any in the box] I'm going to post some of my favorite ones today and we'll start fresh next Friday! :) We've had a lot of comments about the faculty portion of the show, maybe we should do this more! :)

"Great show. The diversity of the instructors [work] means great thoughts for the students"

"I enjoyed the show!! While I enjoyed the vast diversity of work, I especially liked the sculptures and works with crystals'

"It's great to see work by faculty & fun to see work by young art professions"

Indeed ladies, i say ladies because it was all very very girly hand writing, come on guys, let us know what the male side of the art world thinks! We also got this comment, not a BAD comment but a negative, we welcome them all!!!

"Sorry- but could have done without the camo couch and splatter paintings exhibit. It felt sloppy, unedited, and amature. Also, this type of work is not new or suprising -very dissappointed by artist"

This person pick for favorite work was Marzapam w/ hidden leakage [which so far has been everyones favorite], which is MUCH different from Professor Wyshock's work, so i can see why they wouldn't appreciate it as much, some like the more put together highly detailed works. From what i have been told of Professor Wyshock's way of working, he's a very loose, see what you get as you go kinda painter [so was Pollock, also, it's Pollocks birthday today!], and some viewers prefer a more planed out, tight ship. it's cool, we can take it.

Ok so that was exciting! :) i hope to get more comments that create some sort of discussion. Just as an early reminder: Student Competive is coming up fast, deadline is Feb 27th-ish :D

I'm really excited right now because i just got a sneak peek at some of Seldon Hunt's work, WHICH will be in the gallery when we come back from Christmas break in January.

we had a bit of an accident today. When the gallery director [Barbra Satterfield] and the morning student worker [Matt Gattin] came in this morning, one of Kevin Curry's peices had fallen down and broke so we took photos and made reports. it's sad.

but now we have all his works wrapped up and stacked nicely in the back,

just waiting for him to come pick them up. I hope he's not too sad.

whew. Today has been so productive. the Leaded, Kevin Curry and Justin Novak shows are outta the gallery and walls are painted, we are ready for the Seniors to start bring'n in their stuff. a few have already.

So, on Sunday everyone came in to help take down the leaded exhibit [we found it it's being picked up on Thursday and we thought we had longer to pack things up, we are work'n our booties off] and i thought i'd post a few pics of things coming down.

the castle went first, for fear of knocking it with crates.

it fits in 5 crates! crazy.

While we took the castle down Barbra did list checking and what not in her Sunday clothes.

i took a picture of this because i was a little amused that it's takes 2 crates to pack up these tiny works .. crazy!

and sadly, no more bunnies.

so that's what we did Sunday, today we are just doing more of that, Christan and I took down squiggle! it is no more! ;)

Art 21: a post not so much about the Baum

HI! :) so I really wanted to share a bit about some DVD's I have been watching {even thought it's not so much related to the Baum but very much related to being an art student or just an "art lover" so I feel it's OK} Anywoo, I've been watching a series called

Art:21 [art in the twenty-first century]

It's a series that was on PBS for 4 years and so far they have featured 72 artists, contemporary, interesting, great artists of our time. {i'm not sure if they are doing a 2008 season}

I know you think, PBS, DULLL!!! but no way they are so interesting, i just watched one featuring Laurie Anderson, Richard Serra, Sally Mann, Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, and Pepón Osorio. It was so intresting, I never knew of Richard Serra and now I love him and I learned even more about Sally Mann it was a very exciting hour for me.

so anyway, you can get these on Netflix {if you have it} or you can watch clips on the website {they have 300 clips, so find your favorite artist or someone new and learn something about them!} or you can buy them. I have links galore in this post, but I've added the video to the 'flix about art' section over to the right in case you need it later. I really do encourage you guys watch a few of these, they were very entertaining and very inspiring.

OK well thanks for reading, more Baum updates soon I'm sure things are going to get very busy next week, we'll be packing everything up. Putting it all back in crates and shipping it off and the Seniors will be putting up their show. so exciting stuff to come.

HI everyone, i just wanted to let you know we haven't given up on the blog. things have just kinda slowed down a bit here in the gallery. we do have a video to post but i'm having some issues getting it up. but man is it a good one, there is a short bit with Dr. Young wiggleing. haha. anyway, i just wanted to check in let you know we are still think'n about the blog and will soon have something great to talk about i just know it. here are some dates to think about though.

october 22 Justin Novak will be in the Gallery at 5:30 talk about his works
october 23 - 24 Justin Novak will be in the Black Box doing the things they do over there.

the last day to see our current exhibit is october 30th ... that's not to far away. so make sure you get your booties in to see it.

HI HI HI ... so it's 1:34 .. the middle of my shift here at the gallery and i'm big time procrastinating on working on my senior show art works .. sooo, just a bit ago i went in to the gallery and found two guys who had never been in the gallery before and told them about the blog and asked them what their favorite works were. they were very eager to answer.

one fellow, Brandon Janes, said the

Art Guys, Bonded Activity #5 [skyscraper]

was his favorite. he loved 'how perfect' it is. :) he asked me questions like is it solid all the way through? No, it's not :) and i told him about how scared we where to put it together when it came in all those crates. it was good times.

Wow! so much is going on in the gallery. its like we never stop! :) we have visitors like no ones business, this current exhibit has had so much buzz! I'm so excited that everyone has come to see it and are still coming to see it! :)

Today Stefana McClure came to speak about her work. All the way from NEW YORK CITY! She was such an interesting woman, born and raised in Ireland. Went to university in London. She has lived in Japan, Germany, and now New York. that's ... just so much.

I don't have a photo of the works we have in our gallery but i have a pic from the same series ...

So you look at this and your like, oh a red box and some white lines but NO! this is a movie ... Stefana [if i understood her process right] prints out frame by frame the subtitles of a movie and then with her pencil and transfer paper she copies EVERY letter exactly how it is over the page. she said she spends sometimes 6 months on ONE piece! gosh I'd get an eternal headache! she said the page size is determined by the size of the screen she watches the movie on. :D that's cute. She spoke of her love of language and how you can look her works and experience an entire movie in one moment! how wonderful!!! i can't begin to tell you everything i learned about her. she was so cool!

and all of the works are on sale and for art work, not too expensive. us students wouldn't be able to afford it but it's pretty well priced. :) It's a touring exhibit and after it leaves us, it's on its way to Blytheville. So Guys go check it out while it's still here. :) you could write a paper about something in the show I'm sure.

and THENNN this weekend Friends of the Gallery are having an Art Show and Sale featuring Arkansas artists! so that's exciting, in case you want to come and look at some art have some food and buy some stuff here is the address and schedule of the whole weekend ...

So not much went on yesterday. Dr. Kuster brought a couple of her classes in. They were all education majors. I wanted to get pics but I couldn't because I was too busy tryin' to dig myself out of massive pile of backpacks! Education majors have LOTS of books. GAW! They all weighed a ton! My hat's off to'em! I'll be posting more pics soon and if you have any questions at all....ask'em! Or come by and see me and I'll do my best to answer you.

Not much info today. Meghan Gerety's lecture was tonight in the Art Lecture Hall at 7:30pm. I'm sure it went well. Also I've tried to attach a document that tells step by step how to install 2D pieces with color pics and the whole shabang. I'm having issues with getting it on here so if ya want one then leave me your email as a comment on this blog and i'll email you the file......or stop by the gallery MWF 11-2 and i'll get it to ya.

A. We had a artist talk today. Meghan Geretry spoke today about her works. if you missed her you can see her tomorrow [Wed] at 7:30 in the Art Lecture Hall in McCastlain. so that's that.

So last Thursday was the opening reception for the Fall season at the Baum. We had a good turn out. The bunnies with guns entertained folks as well as ALL the graphite related stuff. Food wasn't too bad either. Thanks for eating it! Whatever isn't eaten Aramark takes back and what's done with it we don't ask.

The first pic is what $500 will buy from Aramark. Then it's good that people eat it! We like that. However No food or drink is allowed in the gallery this semester. That means you Gabe!

One of the main attractions was the "pencil castle" as most visitors called it. Barb did some talkin' and informin' and Liz seemed to enjoy herself too.

Just so ya know there's a big roll of paper and pencils on a drawing table in the gallery that you're more than welcome to doodle whatever you want on. I doodled a cartoon face. Others doodled all kinds of stuff. So come in a doodle like crazy if you're bored.........doodledoodledoodledoodledoodledoodledoodle.

My next post'll probably be about how we install 2D works in the gallery. A step by step approach. See ya Wednesday.

a bit late, but here non-the-less

So, now that the gallery is open and everyone that has been has seen 'Squiggles' i figured i might let you guys in on how IMPOSSIBLE it as to put it up. Even though we did it over a week ago.

We started with a small create ... full of 10 plastic boxes, some touch up paint, and the most tiny drill bit you've ever seen. OH, and some impossible instructions.

So, we apparently had to take the TINY drill bit and put ONE BILLION holes in the wall, it some what of a shape like the one in the third photo ... ours, uhh, doesn't look like that, well it does kinda. :) so we went at it ... measured out the wall [I'm not so good with the measuring tape so christan really did all the math] we broke 5 drill bits and had sore arms after the first day but we got it done! :)

we both started on the same end, not thinking, DUH, we could take an end and work to the middle and get this baby DONE, and so we split, i sure did miss my Christan. ha ha. j/k. i hate her. j/k again .. anyway ... we split up and it grew and grew!!

That last photo is just a close up of the 'squiggles' just TINY pieces of painted rope! This took us 4 days and we were finally done! well almost done, along with the wall art there were bags of peices without nails, that had to be scattered on the floor to looks as though they had fallen off the wall and on to the floor, but we were done with all that hard work for sure.

So, after Christan and I were done with Squiggle, it was off to set up Kevin Curry's room we goofed off a bit. Sometimes, an artist wants all his/her work in a show but we just can't fit it in the gallery, or it just doesn't "flow" with the other works so we had to take one of Kevin's works out a piece that looked like a pile of rocks but was made of foam, it just don't fit [both in space or with the rest of the works] and it made Christan sad.

So, that's a VERY SMALL bit of what i did last week. Scribbles, wired art that made noise, hung up labels galore, so much .. but it's finally done and the gallery is OPEN!!! so come take a look!!! Thanks for reading and i hope to see you in the gallery, i'll be at my desk from now on, so say HI!

Hi! :) Nichole here. I'm in charge of the look and feel of this here bloggy! i've been work'n hard ... so here is the run down so far ...

always at the top you'll be able to find out quick and easy what our current exhibit is and how long it will be up.

'Local Arts' :: we have many galleries and museums around Arkansas that people just don't hear about unless they live in that museum/gallery's town sooo, we have a section for 'Local Art' ... local art being museums and galleries around arkansas but not particularly CLOSE to conway. don't be lazy people take a weekend and go see some art. [if there is a gallery/museum in your home town let me know!]

'Artists we like', these are just artists we find online, or happen upon in the gallery or just wherever, if you have an artist you like and you want the world to know more about them, send us the link, we want to know them to! :) and finally

'Art Supplies' because conway is a blackhole for artsupplies with our Hobby Lobby and One Camera Shop. we students are forced to either drive to Little Rock or shop online so, here are some links! also, shopping online is fun. so that's it for NOW ... i'll add more i'm sure! We will, once the gallery is open, be featuring a visitor a day, and putting their photo and small interview on the blog ... :)

'Visitor of the Day' it shall be called. so look for that .. and visit the gallery so you might be pick and be famous for a day!! :)

So what's this blog really for?! well, so you can get to know the Baum ... brandon will mostly be doing all the posting about installations and crates [because i don't find wooden boxes as fasinating as he does ... only kidding, no really i don't] he'll be cluing you in on the yea's and woe's of setting up an exhibit and taking one down all the manly stuff there is to do. because there is so much that goes in to getting all that pretty art up on the walls for you to look at. We think people who know about it! :)

I'll do more of the posting about drama with artists and juicy stuff like that. if there is juicy stuff that happens in an art gallery. x_x Also look for interviews with the Visiting Arts but we won't be asking them stuffy art questions, there is enough of that at the 'artists talks' on campus, fear not! we'll be asking them what their favorite color is, what do they do in their free time, what their favorite bubble bath scent is, you get the point, stupid pointless questions that will waste their time! :)
